Book Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter Collection 1-5 Review :

I'm a paranormal romance reader typically. I had heard of the author and the series before but had never explored the series so I didn't know what to expect. Admittedly I am reading while I wait for new books from JR Ward, Kresley Cole and my other fav authors. I was really pleasantly surprised. This series in books 1-5 is truly a mix of a number of genres. There are romantic overtones and side plots but in books 1-5 the primary plots really are about Anita and her work as a necromancer and consultant to the paranormal task force of the local police force. I am not really into detective novels but I found myself swept up mainly because of the paranormal tint to all of the cases. The stories take place in world where zombies, vampires and warewolves exist openly in society. It's a great world Hamilton has built. It's exciting, a bit gory and violent at times but it kept me turning page after page. I am looking forward to continuing in the series. If you like paranormal, urban fantasy, detective stories and a little bit of romance for good measure, this is the series for you!
A great omnibus edition of the early Anita Blake books. The early books are some of my favorites as the actual storytelling seemed to devolve from actual story into smut by about the tenth book or so. However this collection reminded me exactly what made me fall in love with Anita in the first place. She's tough as nails, fierce and feisty. Sort of a cross between Daria and Buffy the Vampire Slayer. She's sarcastic and sassy, not afraid to get dirty, raises the dead for a living, and stakes vampires on occasion. She is what my childhood aspirations were made of (sadly I did not grow up to raise the dead or stake vampires). She's a petite woman with curves in all the right places and yet enough scar tissue to make you second guess her approachability. She's tough enough to play with the big boys and doesn't need a man to support her, at least not until the later books when she seems to be required to sleep with just about anything male that moves.Guilty Pleasures is the first book in the series and a fantastic introduction to Hamilton's urban fantasy backdrop of St. Louis. Many recurring characters are introduced as well as Anita, the protagonist of the series. This is definitely one of my favorite books. The vampires remind loosely of Anne Rice's in ways, but more updated. But I suppose with them 'coming out of the coffin' so to speak, that accounts for something. Anita is more or less contracted to look into a string of vampire killings, which sets the whole ball in motion for this series. Honestly if all of the books lived up to Guilty Pleasures, I'd be a happy camper. The Laughing Corpse brings back some familiar faces. The overall monster plot is gorier by far. Comparisons of humans reduced to so much meat may make the staunchest of carnivores contemplate a vegetarian outlook. In this book, a wealthy individual requests Anita's services raising the dead. This should be a piece of cake for our heroine save for some moral qualms that cause her to refuse the offer. As you can imagine, wealth rarely takes no for an answer.Circus of the Damned, book number three. It's honestly a toss up some days which book is my favorite between this and Guilty Pleasures. Rogue vampires come to town looking to cause a little trouble. Alright, maybe just a smidge more than a little trouble. But it's nothing Anita can't handle. What's a little more scar tissue if it means saving the day, right? Plus she meets a lovely science teacher that wants to take her caving, you know when her life isn't on the line. The Lunatic Cafe, while I'd give the previous three installments solid five star ratings. This is where things start to turn for me. It's not an issue with characters but the plot for this book is just less appealing to me overall. Lycanthropes are going missing across the area, now that Anita is dating a werewolf, she's the perfect person to look into the case. Throw in some sexist cop attitude and sadistic lycanthrope pair and it's fun for the whole family! Or maybe not. Probably on the not. The story itself isn't necessarily bad, red herring and all, it's just somewhat predictable when you get down to the nitty gritty of it all.Bloody Bones is definitely one of my least favorite books in the series. It jumps around with multiple enemy factions and as always Anita's preternatural knowledge is tops. However there are definitely moments when you wonder just how much knowledge a person in their twenties would truly have. Anita is handled largely as if she is an expert in the field (though that doesn't mean she's treated as one) and it's just one of those moments where I find it to be too much suspending of reality for the story. Crazy, I know. Vampires, werewolves, zombies? All perfectly fine, but I'm concerned with the knowledge and expertise of a person in their 20s.All in all this is a great set of books and I really enjoyed rereading them. For me personally they're largely the best of the series with the exceptions of The Killing Dance and Obsidian Butterfly.
